Black History - Bahamas Nightlife

During the 1940's and 1950's ,as the Tourism Product in The Bahamas developed, The Bahamas was a playground for the Rich and Famous. Dukes, Duchesses, Actors all flocked to our shores to get a taste of what The Bahamas had to offer.

The DownTown Area on any given Friday, was packed with celebrities, names such as Rose and Jackie Kennedy, Harry Belefonte could be seen shopping in one of the many shops DownTown.

The Bahamian Nightlife at that time was also one filled with excitement , Clubs such as The Silver Slipper, Cat and Fiddle, Xansa Bar were packed with both Locals and Tourist all wanting to have a good time. Unlike now, where most tourist only stay in the DownTown Area, tourist ventured to these NightClubs in the 'over the hill' area, and they partied straight into the wee hours of the morning.

In this photo, Actors Sidney Potier and Actor/Singer Harry Belefonte are seen at The Cat and Fiddle , an over the hill NightClub. It is believed that this is where they strategized on how to assist Martin Luther King in The Civil Rights Movement.
