Majority Rule 2014
Many Bahamians know Majority Rule as the day when the Black Majority in The Bahamas achieved power via The Progressive Liberal Party under The Leadership of Lynden Oscar Pindling. But there is a deeper story to this Majority Rule.
On January 10th 1967, after the General Elections, both The United Bahamian Party (UBP) and The Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) won 18 seats respectively in The House of Assembly. Sir Randol Fawkes and Alvin Braynen also won their seats independent of the two major parties.
Days of negotiations ensued between Fawkes, Braynen and the two major party's as they tried to win them over to secure a majority win for their respective party's, but after all was said and done, on January 14th 1967, both Fawles and Braynen agreed to join the PLP , thus giving the party 20 seats in The House of Assembly and subsequently, they formed the Government, the first Black Majority Government.
The day we know refer to as Majority Rule Day.
